Some thoughts on milk, sugar and honey in the Great Rift Valley

I like the Chemelil sugar ad -
my sweetie, my honey, my baby, my sugar ...
Consider the following facts about milk, sugar and honey:

  • Fact#1: It is against Kalenjin etiquette to mix milk and honey. Apparently, it brings a curse on the herd...
  • Fact#2: We like our yoghurt sweetened - and the sweetening does not affect milk production or the herd.
  • Fact#3: Sugar is retailing at nearly Kshs. 250 per Kg
  • Fact#4: Honey is retailing at Kshs. 300 per Kg
  • Fact#5: Honey is a healthier, effective substitute for sugar.
  • Fact#6: 1 kg honey lasts longer than 2 kg of sugar
  • Fact#7: I come from an outstanding honey producing community
  • Fact#8: The capitalism that governs sugar, electricity, maize and famine causes starvation, poverty and dependency
  • Fact#9: The capitalism behind honey production empowers currently marginalized people. Honey can be produced almost anywhere in the country
  • Fact#10: Our elders can release honey of its current encumbrances so that it can play its popular role as the sweetener of choice
I cherish my heritage - but my culture, I define. We are not slaves to custom.

Honey + Tea + Milk = Great Chai

I think these prices have been going up persistently for too long - if something is not done and done in a hurry, we are staring at social doom; really!
